GenYES students in the news

March 14th, 2007

Today’s Glens Falls, New York Post Star features GenYES students from Queensbury (William H. Barton Intermediate School) and St. Mary’s Ballston Spa participating in a technology showcase, Students Show Off Tech Savvy.

“Queensbury fifth-graders and GenYes program members Nikari Carota, Emma Francett and Samantha Knight experiment with an Apple software product called Photo Booth during Tuesday’s technology showcase at Adirondack Community College in Queensbury”

The WHB GenYES squad presented projects and participated in virtual field trips in the day-long event.

Roseann Anzalone, the college’s Office of Student Computing director, has been part of the committee organizing the event for eight years.

When she first began, students and teachers lacked most of the technology of today, she said, and focused most of their projects on PowerPoint presentations. Students, especially the younger ages, also were less involved, she said.

“To me, the major difference is, it used to be a lot of projects were teacher-driven projects. … Now it seems to be a lot more student-driven,” Anzalone said.

Congratulations to everyone involved!

Update – GenYES teacher Wendy Single of Queensbury, NY has posted more details about this event in her blog, Wendy’s Ed Tech Blog. Wendy’s blog is also featured on our list of GenYES and TechYES class sites and blogs (over on the right side). Her blog is a great personal account of what happens in a GenYES class.
