Nick News visits Longfellow Middle School – Day Two

April 17th, 2007

[Note: This is a post by our reporter at the scene - Theresa R., eighth grader at Longfellow Middle School in Hill City Kansas about Nick News videotaping a segment in their school. More here.]

Today is the last day of Nick News being here. Everyone just wants to thank Nick News again for everything that they’ve done for us. We are very thankful that they came and did this.

Kara enjoys a spaghetti lunch with the Head StartersReggie, Taylor, and I took pictures of Kara, Lowell, and Paul [of the Nick News production team] eating with the Head Start kids. They all asked questions about the kids’ lives. The kids were so interested in them. There were smiles and laughter down in the lunchroom. There was not one sad face in there. Mrs. Mitchell [of Head Start] came up to me and told me that she loved my blogs. She was very happy about it.

During Pre-Algebra, Kara, Lowell, and Paul came down to film us doing our algebra with Mr. Hamel. Some of the high school students came down to take pictures for their newspaper. They were Chase, Janette, Joelene, and Tane. It’s really exciting when the high schoolers want to come and do something like this. Everyone was really nervous yesterday, but today everyone lost their nervousness and they didn’t think it was really that bad.The teachers and students working on GenYES projects for LMS

I asked Mr. Hamel if he had to wear make-up today and he said no. He jokingly said he put it on this morning so they wouldn’t have to do it when he had to be interviewed. Blair is very nervous about getting interviewed again at 2:30. She wants Mr. Parker to go with her, but I don’t think he’s going. She’s so nervous! I think she is more scared than anything in the world. I don’t think she should be nervous anymore.

Everyone is obsessed with knowing what I’m writing. A lot of my classmates have told me they like my blogs. I didn’t think anyone was going to like my blogs because no one has ever read any of my other blogs before, so I didn’t think they would like them. I’m glad that they like what I’m doing for our school. If you get a chance to do something like this, don’t let your school down and not show any support because your school needs all the help it can get from the students and even the teachers. You only get one life to live. That’s what I’ve learned throughout this whole experience.

Bryce and Eric work with the Head Start teachers on their project.I’ve also learned that you can’t do everything on your own. You have to have friends who are going to be there beside you to help you. I can’t imagine doing this whole thing on my own. When I blog, I get ideas from my friends, and the people who helped me blog were Kara, Lowell, Paul, Mr. Parker, and Mr. Hamel. I’ve always been told that I can do what I want to do if I set my mind to it. Well, I didn’t believe in that until now. I just needed everyone to show me that I can’t always do things on my own, even if I wanted to. I struggle with a lot of things, but I have teachers who support me and they are here to help no matter who it is and what the situation is. I know I’m going to go to high school with this experience in my head all the time.

Paul tells the Head Start students stories during lunchThese past two days have been the biggest challenge for me with Nick News here, me trying to blog every chance I had, trying to do my homework and staying focused, but the hardest thing for me was trying to think of what I was going to put in my blogs. I could never focus on what I really wanted to write about each day. When I talked to Kara, she put a lot of different ideas in my head. She helped me figure out what I wanted to write. I now see how difficult it is for a blogger to blog everyday. They always have to have an idea of what to write about and how to put it into words that people of all ages can comprehend. But once I start talking to my friends or Mr. Parker or even Mr. Hamel, they seemed to inspire me on what I wanted to write about that day. I don’t think I could’ve done this without them. I just want to thank Nick News, Kara, Lowell, and Paul for coming to our school. They’ve been so great and patient with us!
