Social Bookmarking in Plain English- Another great movie by CommonCraft!

August 16th, 2007

Hurrey! Another great clip from the creative folks at CommonCraft. This short video explains the possibilities of social bookmarking and how sites like del.icio.us, furl and Magnolia work to make web pages easier to remember, organized and easy to share. The reason why I wanted to share this video with everyone is because I am an avid bookmarker and love to use my bookmark tab when ever I find a great resource that I want to share or come back too. I have found after watching this video I was still doing things the “old way”. Listed are three problems I now have with the “old way”…

1. When I find a resource and bookmark it the “old way”, I can only access it from my computer! I would have to email the link to someone else if I wanted to Share this with anyone.

2. When using the “old way” you have no idea how many other people also taged this bookmark. So by not hosting my bookmarks on a bookmarking site I cut my self off of any community involvement and gaining new resources through other people.

3. Searching through my “old” bookmark tab is much more time consuming. The “old way” is lacking a short description section which make searching through older bookmarks challenging.

Since my del.icio.us account is hosted on the del.icio.us site I am able to share them with everyone in my network. I can also tag my bookmarks so they are organized and easy for me and other people to find as well. Social bookmarking is the solution to all of the problems listed as you can see. Now I am an official del.icio.us user and proud of it. When I find tools like social bookmarking I can’t help but think of all the awesome ways teachers and students can use this tool in the classroom.

I encourage everyone to watch this video, even if you have a social bookmarking account. Helping others become familiar with web 2.0 tools will only help our schools utilize these tools better.

I now can say I feel organized, informed and connected. What more could a bookmarking junkie ask for :)

    HI Sylvia,

I used this Common Craft movie with two groups of teachers and librarians at workshops this week. VERY effective. The one on RSS feed readers and the one on wikis by Common Craft are also very good.

    Thanks for sharing,
