When I am not working as the Customer Support Lead for Generation YES I have many other great opportunities to work with youth in my spare time. One of these opportunities is coaching girls’ basketball. Like any good teacher a coach has to be dedicated, nurturing, fair and respectable. I find the experience of working with students both on and off the court is very similar. In order for them to succeed whether it be in basketball or in the classroom we need to give them responsibility and allow them to meet to the challenge. I find when I am coaching I expect a lot out of my players, regardless their talent or physical ability. My expectations include; all players take chances, listen, learn to work together, ask questions, work hard and take advantage of any learning opportunity.
My hope is that these expectations stay with them in the classroom. Both coaches and teachers are educators and we are all part of this learning community. We do make a difference regardless if our setting is a technology lab or weight room.
This YouTube video was sent to me by my dad, both once a teacher and a coach and I feel this clip defines how teaching is coaching and vice versa, both having an impact in students everyday lives.
