Sylvia, my journey began when I attended NECC04 in New Orleans, my hometown. I was amazed by all the new words I was hearing and wondered how long it would take me to really understand them. I felt I had been transported to a different planet. I left that conference with a renewed zeal toward my career (I had almost 30 years of classroom experience) and started to integrate tech into my classroom. Things were going great until the tragedy of Katrina hit. While I was thrown offtrack for about a year and a half, I am still part of the journey.

While I took me longer than I had originally planned, I have indeed completed the Circle of Life of Technology Using Educator. I agree with Tom when he says, "No process of this sort is really linear/cyclical. I believe that you go through mini-cycles over and over as you progress along this continuum."

May all of us enjoy and learn well as we journey on.

Thank you for a great post. I really loved the way in which you captured the essence of your changing perspective towards ed tech and your conditional optimism towards its use.

Ok..I'm going to get all sappy on you about this, but it honestly choked me up to see my professional life captured so succinctly here. I took a job as an instructional technology coach, and have been wondering lately if I made the biggest mistake of my life...The "circle of life" and two snow days in a row might just get me back on my feet! THANK YOU!

Fantastic post Sylvia - thanks for digging it out and posting it again - Very much looking forward to hearing you speak, and meeting you, at ACEC2010 in April in Melbourne, AU next year.

In many ways I think conferences need reinvention just as much as schools do - what are the alternatives to Stage on the Stage for conferencing and our own peer to peer learning?

This is right on!

I would agree with Tom above though, as I am sure you would too. No process of this sort is really linear/cyclical. I believe that you go through mini-cycles over and over as you progress along this continuum.

Well thought out - thanks for posting. I plan to share this with the team of Instructional Technology Coaches I work with. I think it will validate much of what we live and witness.

Excellent summary and explanation! You have truly captured the overwhelming feelings that sometimes occur in the life of a user and supporter of ed tech. It's nice to be reminded that it's all whorthwhile in the end and that all of this ever-changing technology really can make a positive difference in education...

Thanks for an excellent post. You have hit the nail right on the head and captured the process quite succinctly with the appropriate stages and the shape. Over the past year my graduate studies brought me in and took me through most of the stages of the circle. At times though, I feel like I am passing through one (or several) stages again, if even very briefly. This is probably a necessary, positive, and healthy process of reexamination. My guess is that this will continue even after I figure out how to provide effective guidance for others (call it sage on the side, guide on the stage, or motivating mentor, maybe?). After all, it is a circle.

The circle of life indeed. As I was reading your piece, I found myself marking the steps I have been through. I am happy to be nearing the end of the circle :-) You have encouraged me to keep on going, keep swimming, even if against the current. Thanks for the great insight.
Cheers,
Scott
